The backside that goes against the mattress has a plastic type protection but the upper part is a very soft cotton texture. This protector is absolutely spill proof. I accidently spilled liquid on it and it did not leak through onto our brand new mattress at all!!! I am so glad I purchased this high quality mattress protector! I am overall very pleased with it.

Very well made and I am not concerned about the corners tearing when I put it on the bed. We have a split king but I could only get this in queen so I got it in a queen.
Very nice deep pockets for newer pillowtop mattresses and the queen size lets me wrap the sides under the bed so it stays in place. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was that I expected the bambooo to be cooler. Most of my bamboo blankets and sheets help with foam beds but this was a little warm some reason. Nonetheless I use an old sheet under the pad and a bamboo sheet on top of it and that has done the trick.
